Meet John Fairclough Associate at Rickitt Partnership

Before he heads out to appointments we managed to catch our very own John Fairclough for a quick chat. What an illuminating experience - it turns out that underneath that mild-mannered exterior there beats the heart of a rocker!....

WHAT MADE YOU FIRST GET INTO ESTATE AGENCY?

I’d spent 2 years working in Chester for Gieves & Hawkes when my father came home one evening and asked me if I would be interested in a job within Estate Agency as he knew someone who was looking for a trainee. So, after a 2 hour ‘chat’ I was offered the position as a Trainee Estate Agent and on the 14th October 1988 I started at Edwards Grounds in Runcorn. Within 3 months I was running the Branch and ran it for 12 years.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

I was a Trainee Technician for Peter Cox Preservation learning timber preservation and damp proofing. It was a great job, it didn’t last long but it gave me a grounding in property preservation which has certainly helped over the last 29 years in Estate Agency.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

Going out to see a property and knowing that you have a buyer who would love it, phoning them, telling them it’s perfect for them, they then view it and buy it!

WHAT IS THE WORST PART OF YOUR JOB?

Knowing that some people just don’t listen to good advice!

DESCRIBE RICKITT PARTNERSHIP IN 3 WORDS

Professional, honest & trustworthy

IF YOU WERE NOT AN ESTATE AGENT WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM JOB BE?

I would really have liked to have been in a band! When in school (1982) we had the nucleus of a Punk Rock band with a slightly political bias!! We recorded a demo tape, but a visit from the Police and threats that the Obscene Publications Squad might get involved soon brought that to an abrupt end. When it comes to a proper job though, I don’t really know. I’ve done this for so long now that I really haven’t done anything else. When I was leaving school I had ideas of becoming an architect, but they were two a penny! Or a Doctor as realistically you can’t do anything better than to be there to help people. But then the Peter Cox position appeared and life took a different course.

IF YOU HAD A SUPERPOWER WHAT WOULD IT BE?

The ability to read minds! Sometimes it would help to know what people think! Mind you sometimes not!!!

AFTER WORK WHAT DO YOU ENJOY…?

Sci Fi, listening to music especially rock/metal/punk, playing the guitar(badly), squash, walking and cooking. I do also have a love for Roman History and working in Chester (Roman Fortress!!!) in an office above Roman ruins is perfect.

3 THINGS THAT DEFINE YOU

Honesty, the desire to have a 280 ‘Brooklands’ Ford Capri! And being quite chilled and unflustered.

WHERE ARE YOU HAPPIEST?

When I’m with Mrs F! – Grief get me a bucket!
