Ralph Reviews

Ralph reviews a detached Victorian house in Farndon

Well summer is now in full flow but I have to admit that the changeable weather recently has left me a little discombobulated  – one minute I’m dressed head to paw in sou’wester and waterproofs and the next I’m lying on a cool matt licking banana-flavoured doggie ice creams to keep me cool!

However, one thing I am very clear on is that one can’t beat visiting a beautiful Cheshire village in summertime, they just seem to sum up the very best of British.  So you can imagine my delight when the team informed me that the subject of my next Ralph’s Review was to be a beautiful detached Victorian house in the lovely village of Farndon.

On a pause between sunbathing sessions, dad and I hopped in the car and took the short journey to Farndon.  In the heart of the village we turned off the road between two stone pillars and onto a gravel parking area in front of the very elegant façade of a  white painted house.  Complete with three impressive bay windows, it promised everything that a Victorian house should –  imposing rooms, period features and elegance in abundance.

I stepped as gracefully as I could out the car (which is not terribly easy when you have such short legs) and glided nonchalantly up to the front door.  Once inside, I found myself in an entrance hall which was full of the period features I had expected.  I took a door to my right which led me into an impressive dining room.  With timber flooring, one of the three beautiful bay windows and an Edwardian style fireplace, this really is a space to entertain in.  I could just picture the lights dimmed, candlelight bathing the table with a gentle glow, the sound of crystal glasses clinking merrily… and me, biding my time under the table, waiting for each and every delicious morsel of food that may fall unwittingly from a fork…

With a cheeky smile and a slight dribble of saliva out the corner of my mouth, I turned about tail and headed back into the hallway where I took a door on the opposite side which led into a lovely and welcoming sitting room – the perfect spot for casual family evenings.  My next stop was a supremely elegant drawing room.  As I gazed around I saw period features everywhere from the coved ceiling to the wooden block flooring to the bay window and the Victorian style open fireplace.

In my mind’s eye I could see our guests moving effortlessly from the dining room to this exquisite drawing room to relax and continue the evening in comfort.  I could see myself, holding court in the centre of the room, witty repartee causing a tinkle of laughter around the room… As I sashayed here and there around the room, filling a glass here, offering a thoughtful introduction between guests there, I spotted a door at the far end of the room.  I popped my head through only to discover a very handy study – now that would be the perfect place for a spot of home working.

However, thoughts of work were far away as, still in my role as “host with the most”, I glided elegantly (or so I thought) out the room and made my way into a beautiful kitchen breakfast family room.  Now this open plan area was quite something – all the period features are beautifully conserved but the space is perfectly designed to complement modern living and I could easily see that this would be the part of the house we as a family would spend most time in.  It has absolutely everything – a modern kitchen with all the best appliances, a sociable dining area and a slightly separate cosy family area where we could all snuggle together to watch a film, it even has a display fireplace and a corner wood burner.

Exploring the rest of the ground floor I found no less than two cloakrooms, a utility room as well as the stairs down to two cellar rooms which would be very useful for storage , or as a huge wine cellar to accommodate all the entertaining I was planning to do in this beautiful home.  Still with my mind on my amazing capacity for entertaining, I trotted back up the stairs from the cellar and, without pause, up the stairs to the first floor.  The size of this wonderful property was brought home to me when I realised that there were no less than six double bedrooms, one with an en suite bathroom, as well as two family bathrooms.  Wow, I thought to myself, there would even be space for guests to stay over and plenty of bathrooms for both family and guests to use!

I was eager to see the outside space at Oak House and so I bounded back downstairs and out the front door.  The house sits in a corner plot so benefits from plenty of space.  As I had seen when I arrived, at the front of the house is mostly gravel with a few lawn areas, there is lawn to the side and a large lawned area at the back that is accessed, together with a single detached garage, via a further driveway.  This rear garden was large enough for me to run from one end to the other, ears flapping, and be out of breath at the end of it!

As I caught my breath and prepared to leave Oak House I cast a last look around and thought what a perfect family home this would make – one in which family and friends could easily be accommodated – a lovely social space in which to live.  If you have fallen for Oak House please do not hesitate to contact myself or one of my team on 01244 322322 or [email protected] to arrange a viewing.

Until next time

Love Ralph X
